Pre-conference field trip to the Malé Karpaty Mountains


Topic: Mineralogy - a base for petrological and geotectonic insights to the evolution, structure, and geology of the Malé Karpaty complex.

Time schedule: The field trip starts on Saturday, 16 September 2023, in Bratislava. Pick up points are:

  • (1) at 9 am in front of the main railway station in Bratislava (Bratislava hlavná stanica). In the morning, a train connects Vienna (departure Vienna central station "Hauptbahnhof" 7:45) and Bratislava (arrival 8:44).
  • (2) at 9:30 am in front of the Nivy Hotel.

Overnights: The participants are kindly asked to make hotel reservations in Bratislava on their own; please consider that the field-trip organizers do not make any hotel reservations for the overnights, also not for the night Saturday, 16 September 2023, to Sunday, 17 September 2023.

The field-trip organisers recommend the following hotels:

It is a good value hotel in the quite Ružinov district, overnight amounts about 60 €, buffet breakfast 10 € (the hotel can be reached from the main railway station and the airport by bus no. 61. Please exit at stop Zimný štadión (from the main railway station it is the 5th stop in direction Letisko / airport).

It is located a few minutes' walk from the Bratislava Main railway station; from the airport please take the bus line 61. It is a luxury designed hotel, overnight amounts about 95 € (including breakfast about 105 €).

We return to Vienna by bus (if the group is small we will go back by train) on Sunday, 17 September 2023. We will be back in time for the Opening Ceremony of MinWien2023.

Program: The pre-conference excursion focuses on the Malé Karpaty Mountains which are close to and part of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Also, participants will become familiar with some natural and historical places of interest. Most locations are easily accessible, but trail shoes are recommended. The Pezinok – Rybníček stop is accessible via a relatively steep slope only, but an alternate program is planned on site. Please do not forget a rain coat.

Field-trip fee: 120 €. The fee includes transport in Slovakia and a field-trip guide book. In addition, a picnic lunch on Saturday and on Sunday as well as some refreshments during the field trip will be provided (maximum number of participants: 25).

Please note: Booking of the Field Trip requires the payment of both conference and excursion fees. Reservation will be made first-come-first-served. If we have to cancel a field trip (e.g., because there are too few participants), we will inform you per e-mail ASAP, and the excursion fee will be refunded fully.
Should the field trip be completely booked, we will set up a waiting list. In case you have to cancel your participation, please let us know as soon as possible as there may be others on the waiting list.
